Impact of Violence on Women in the Perinatal Period
7 December 2021 | Kathleen Kendall-Tackett
Kathleen Kendall-Tackett has generously shared her extensive research findings with LLL Leaders, health care providers and IBCLCs working with women in the perinatal period. She has compiled many studies of large groups around the world and has shared many of them with us. She is a family violence researcher, studying the impact of adverse childhood events and partner violence and how these life experiences may affect women physically and mentally. The women studied ranged from low income mothers to the affluent, all of whom are very much affected by events such as maltreatment as a child, parental impairment, loss of a parent in the first five years of life, divorce, community violence and lack of food, housing and medical care. She explores the many types of abusive experiences and how these may translate into later health issues and behaviors. The information she shares is eye opening for those of us who care for families from all walks of life. You may find her webinar quite thought provoking as you consider your own life experiences and those of the mothers you care for. She asks an important question – why do some people react differently to adversity and abuse and what life factors modify their response?

Monica also offers instructions on sensory focusing to help increase one’s personal awareness.
