The book written by mothers who became the Founders of La Leche League, and which has most contributed to changing the point of view on breastfeeding over the decades since its first publication, is The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding (The Womanly Art). Millions of families, their children, their relatives, their doctors have been touched by the truth, the biological normalcy and the wisdom of these pages, constantly updated to incorporate the latest scientific research.
When our seven forward-thinking Founders assembled the first 31 pages in 1958, they could surely never have imagined that tens of thousands of Leaders would have developed their leadership based on those pages!
To date, The Womanly Art has been translated into 14 languages, with 11 in print at this time, and there are versions for the blind and visually impaired, and versions that use accessible language.
Over the years of the publication of The Womanly Art, La Leche League (LLL) has promoted a renewed culture of breastfeeding in places and communities where it had been lost, all over the world.
While there is still a need for the information to be found in The Womanly Art, we hope that the day will come when the value and practice of breastfeeding are so well known that there will no longer be a need for LLL or The Womanly Art.
On World Book Day 2020 we celebrate the The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding.
